Again and again, societies are forced to weigh economic efficiency against fairness. But what makes one outcome better than another – and who gets to decide? These are the kinds of questions that drive the research of Maya Eden. Read our insight → https://lnkd.in/dnsAccrq → Should groceries remain affordable even if it means underpaying the people who stock the shelves? → Should access to global markets justify job losses in struggling regions? → How much should a society be willing to give up, economically, to ensure a fairer distribution of income? These kinds of questions lie at the heart of major policy decisions. In her inaugural lecture at the University of Zurich, Maya proposed an elegant and rigorous approach to these thorny questions. Rather than treating such dilemmas as matters of subjective values or political ideology, she argues that we can reason our way toward ethical clarity – starting from basic principles most of us already agree on. Her research, situated at the intersection of economics and ethics, provides a compelling framework for evaluating policy decisions ranging from wage setting to trade agreements, redistribution, and beyond. Maya Eden joined the UZH Department of Economics at the University of Zurich as Professor of Economics in June 2024 and is an Affiliated Professor at the UBS Center for Economics in Society. Her research spans a broad spectrum of issues in welfare economics, macroeconomics and the normative analysis of economic policy. #EconomicsForSociety #UZH #shareUBS University of Zurich UBS UZH Department of Economics UZH Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics

Enabling world-class research in economics on all levels, to be conducted at the University of Zurich.
About us
The UBS Center for Economics in Society, UBS Center in short, is an Associated Institute at the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich. It was established in 2012, enabled by a founding donation by UBS, which the bank made on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. In view of the generous donation, the university named the UBS Center after its benefactor. The UBS Center serves two main aims. First, it enables world-class research in economics on all levels, to be conducted at the University’s Department of Economics. It thereby supports the department’s ambition to become one of the top economics departments in Europe and to make Zurich one of the best places for research in economics. The UBS Center’s other aim is to serve as a platform for dialogue between academia, business, politics, and the broader public, fostering continuous knowledge transfer. Delivering on these aims will also strengthen the position of Zurich, and Switzerland more generally, as a leading location for education and business. The UBS Center is governed by and financed through an independent foundation, the UBS Foundation of Economics in Society, chaired by former Federal Councillor Kaspar Villiger. It is led by a management team consisting of Prof. Ernst Fehr, Director, Prof. Joachim Voth, Scientific Director and Dr. Matthias Ammann, Chief Operating Officer. The Center’s Advisory Board, comprised of some of the most renowned economists of our time, including several Nobel Prize laureates, ensures the high quality of the work at the UBS Center, and provides guidance on all academic matters. Its members include Nobel Prize laureates Prof. Esther Duflo, Prof. Oliver Hart, Prof. James Heckman, Prof. Daniel Kahneman, Prof. Thomas Sargent, Prof. Robert Shiller, and many more.

How do media and social media influence political beliefs and actions? What are the implications of controlled media for the functioning of democracy? These are among the timely and critical questions explored in the research of UBS Foundation Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott. His research highlights the pivotal role of media independence in sustaining democratic institutions. Together with Julia Cagé (Sciences Po), he is recognized with the 2025 Yrjö Jahnsson Award for groundbreaking work in political economy and the media. The UBS Center for Economics in Society warmly congratulates both prize recipients on this outstanding achievement! The Yrjö Jahnsson Award is the most prestigious prize for young economists in Europe, awarded every two years by the European Economic Association (EEA) to scholars under 45 for outstanding contributions to theoretical and applied economics. David is the second member of the UZH Department of Economics at the University of Zurich to receive this honor, following Fabrizio Zilibotti’s award in 2009 – an impressive milestone that reflects the department’s sustained excellence. Joachim Voth studied the factors that contribute most to a fulfilled life and his research shows that there is nothing better for a contented life than work. The UBS Foundation Professor for Macroeconomics and Financial Markets believes that society's demonization of work and glorification of leisure is absurd. “We view work as something hostile,” criticizes the economist. In our latest Nobel Opinions series, French economist Jean Tirole sees gigantic events like the one in Glasgow as unsuitable for driving climate change action forward.
